Indian Archaeologist Stumbles Upon A ‘Great Forgotten Civilization’ In Mizoram

In an incredible discovery, archeologists from India have come across ruins of a ‘Great Forgotten Civilization’ in Mizoram

According to reports from the Times of India, a group or archeologists investigating the mysterious megalithic structures at Vangchhia in Champhai, in the district of Mizoram, came across what appear to be the remains of a long lost civilization that ruled the region in the distant past, concluded archaeologists.

In a statement from Sujeet Nayan, who is the assistant superintending archaeologist at ASI Delhi (Archaeological Survey of India) and the leading researcher of the excavation taking place at Vangchhia, his discovery can be considered as one of the most important (if not the most important) archaeological discovery in the century. The archaeologists firmly believe that the mysterious ruins have still a lot to offer and are key to hitherto unknown facts about Mizoram and the northeast.

According to reports, the group or archaeologists led by Sujeet Nayan documented and analyzed over fifty structures at Vangchhia, with plans of returning to the site for further research and study, which could give extensive insight. Allowing researchers understand more about the lost civilization.

Researchers collected numerous fragments of charcoal and numerous pieces of shattered pottery which will be sent to labs in order to analyze them in detail, and to help understand the age of this ‘Lost Civilization’.

“We were exploring what lay beneath the bushes and thick foliage. The entire site could hold traces of a lost city or a greater lost civilization. It is amazing to stumble upon so many things. We need more time and research to reach a final conclusion,” said Nayan.

The Times of India further reports that the team or researchers stumbled across burial sites that appeared like water pavilions and terraces, reminiscent of royal buildings.

The group of researchers states that the retaining walls/terraces of the site were created with the use of megalithic blocks of stone, with the terraces having an average height that ranged from 10 to 25 feet.

“The terraces might have served as burial sites, but this can’t be ascertained as of now,” Nayan said. “There are nine terraces. We explored around eight. We also found evidence of what seems to be a water pavilion. We presume people here liked their environment and the water pavilion is comparable to those found in Mughal structures,” he added.

The area where the remains of the great civilizations were discovered is close to the Myanmar border, comprising rolling hills and extremely thick forests. The excavation at Vanhchia was conducted after the director of the Archaeological Survey of India visited the site last year in November, in order to study the numerous artifacts and structures with enigmatic depictions of humanoid figures and animals.

Members of the Archaeological Survey of India agree that this ancient site once belonged to a great ‘Lost Civilization’ which ruled the region in the distant past.

Further studies will be conducted on the site and researchers hope to have more information about the mysterious civilization after lab results provide an approximate age of the structures.
