(TRUNEWS) Sakurajima volcano has erupted.
Located in southern Japan, the volcano sent hot lava down the mountainside and ash into the air.
Authorities have said it burst about 7 p.m. local time, and there were no reports of injury. The existing crater has expanded to a 1.2-mile radius.
It happened 50 km (30 miles) from the Sendai nuclear station, but warnings have not been issued there.
Tremors have been felt for the past few month, prompting officials to issue warning. The volcano is sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, according to The Guardian, which consists of more than 100 volcanoes. A 2014 eruption at Mount Ontake killed 57 people.
UPTICK IN ACTIVITY
In Antarctica Thursday, a volcanic eruption occurred about 4,000 km (2,500 miles) south of Australia. Big Bend, located on Heard Island emitted vapor and poison gas, according to Discovery News.
The area has been a hotspot of volcanic activity since 1881. But because of its remote location, eruptions are rarely seen.
