The U.S., southern Mexico, northeastern Brazil, northeastern and southwestern Africa, the Middle East, northern Australia, and Indonesia all have been getting pummeled with record heat. Phoenix saw a high of 118 degrees breaking a record of 115 set nearly 50 years ago and even causing a flight to be diverted in mid-flight.
India also recorded its highest-ever temperature when the heat in the town of Phalodi, in the western state of Rajasthan, reached 51 degrees Celsius (123.8 degrees Fahrenheit). These extreme temperatures blasted the region for 48 hours straight breaking records and even causing roads there to melt. Shanghai, which is China’s largest city shattered its previous all-time record high multiple times this last year starting with a high of 105.1ºF (40.6ºC) on July 25th, surpassing the old record of 104.4ºF (40.2ºC) that had stood since 1942.
