FEARFUL: Women are increasingly reporting nuisance drones

It includes female victims complaining of flying drones near windows which appear to be trying to film them.

But what is most startling is how quickly the drones have been turned from novelty gadgets to a tool used by seedy sex pests.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary received just five complaints about drones in 2013, but from January 2015 to the beginning of September, that had increased to 49.

The revelation comes as a dangerous drone driver nearly took out a jet plane along with hundreds of passengers after flying within ten feet of the airliner near Heathrow.

Civil Aviation Authority

The laws regarding drones are governed by the Civil Aviation Authority.

It states: “When you fly a drone in the UK it is your responsibility to be aware of the rules that are in place to keep everyone safe.

“Make sure you can see your drone at all times and don’t fly higher than 400 feet.

“Always keep your drone away from aircraft, helicopters, airports and airfields.

“Use your common sense and fly safely; you could be prosecuted if you don’t.

“Drones fitted with cameras must not be flown within 50 metres of people, vehicles, buildings or structures or in over congested areas or large gatherings such as concerts and sports events.”

New gun to shoot down drones

Ben Knowles, from Portishead-based media production company Redleaf AV Ltd, has been legitimately using drones for a number of years for filming.

But with the popularity of the unmanned aerial vehicles soaring, the firm is offering training sessions to help people get more out of their devices.

The 29-year-old said: “I think a lot of the complaints to the police are about people who are flying them but do not really know what they are doing in the sense of the regulations.

“Part of what we do is try to educate people about the rules and there are certainly a lot of ways people can help themselves abide by them and in turn save police time.

“Some drones will fly miles overhead, but are only allowed 400ft upwards and should only be 500 metres away.

“When people have trouble seeing their drones, it does become a problem because if you cannot see it, it is difficult to control.

“The propellers spin extremely fast and there have been cases of people losing an eye and some of them could easily take out a chunk of a finger.

“Drones have become the latest gadget to have, particularly as they have come down in price and become affordable, but people need to learn about their aircraft and that is as important as flying.”
