‘Sharia Police’ Attack, Hospitalize Austrian

A German court ruled Dec. 10, 2015 that "Shariah police" can operate on city streets

Muslim migrants wreaking havoc across Austria turned their sights on the capital over the weekend: One man was hospitalized by a “Shariah patrol” in Vienna while gangs of Afghans and Chechens battled in other parts of the city.

Petition Congress to ‘halt Muslim immigration now’

Austrian officials moved to stem the tide of migrants entering the country in January, but they may have acted too late. A “Shariah patrol” like those operating in Germany now roams the streets of Vienna. A Chechen man who told the gang to stop harassing his wife and daughter was pummeled for speaking up, the Daily Mail reported Monday.

Another part of the city erupted in violence when a group of 50 men attacked each other with iron bars, knives and wooden planks, the newspaper reported. Police were only able to arrest six suspects from Afghanistan.

Similar incidents have been reported in the cities of Graz, Linz, Polten, Salzburg and Sankt.

“Many residents around here are really worried. Personally I’m really worried if I have to go out on my own,” local resident Renate Hofstatter said, the newspaper reported.

“I am a caretaker in the local block of flats, and most of the old people don’t go out at night any longer,” added a citizen who wished to remain anonymous.

Roughly 90,000 migrants from the Middle East and North Africa requested asylum in Austria last year. Officials said Jan. 20 that they only plan on accepting 37,500 this year and 127,500 through 2019.

“Austria must reduce the influx, because we are simply overstretched,” Sebastian Kurz, the Austrian foreign minister, told reporters in Berlin on Feb. 24, the New York Times reported.

Last weekend’s attacks in Austria came less than three months since a German court permitted “Shariah police” to “patrol” streets for Islamic-law violators.

A judge ruled Dec. 10, 2015, that Salafist men who were arrested in Wuppertal, Germany, in September 2014 did nothing wrong when they harangued passers-by attempting to enter clubs, casinos and bars. Members of the Islamic group wore vests with “Sharia police” printed across the back and carried “Sharia-Controlled Zone” signs.

The court’s ruling came against a backdrop of heightened tension over German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to open the door to over 1 million Muslim migrants from the Middle East and North Africa in 2015.

Other nation’s struggling to cope with a spike in crime linked to migrants include Finland, France, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Norway, for example, recently charged four migrants in connection with the gang-rape of a 19-year-old male at a reception center in the city of Vestfold, WND reported Feb. 22. The incident, which was filmed in December, included three men in their 20s and one in his 40s.

Vestfold’s suspects face charges ranging from rape, complicity to rape and cause grievous bodily harm, or complicity to grievous bodily harm.

“We are in possession of a video of the assaults, which the accused have filmed themselves,” Police attorney Lise Dalhaug told reporters on Feb. 22. The incident took place at the Oslofjord Convention Center at Brunstad in Vestfold in late December.

Three of the suspects applied for asylum in Norway. The fourth suspect, arrested in Stockholm, is a legal resident of Sweden.
