Michelle Obama thinks it’s racist that someone at Target asked for her help with something.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Obama’s Presidency is the thing that makes it especially unique: his family’s race. It was certainly a factor during both of his presidential campaigns. And the Obamas are still playing the race card, despite holding the loftiest positions of power in the entire world. You’d think that between running the events at the White House and pushing health food, Michelle Obama would have something else to complain about besides being asked to help someone at Target. But during an interview with People, Michelle and Barack opened up about “racist” experiences they have had before and during their time at the White House.
Barack has been mistaken for a valet. Michelle wasn’t mistaken for anything besides being someone helpful. It’s almost as if human interaction that isn’t designed around them is necessarily racist.
Michelle Obama thinks it’s racist for someone at Target to ask her for help.
Barack and Michelle Obama are sharing their own personal experiences with racial prejudice, saying they’ve been mistaken for valet drivers and Target employees — the latter even occurring during their time at the White House.
“The only person who came up to me in the [Target] store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn’t see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her,” Michelle Obama told People magazine, recalling a trip she made to Target, according to excerpts released Wednesday.
She continued, “Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn’t anything new.”
President Barack Obama shared that he has been mistaken for staff as well on numerous occasions during his life.
“There’s no black male my age, who’s a professional, who hasn’t come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn’t hand them their car keys,” said the president.
Michelle just sounds so resigned, as if Selma, Alabama was a recent memory. And Barack is miffed that he has the style of a Waldorf valet. I would be too. But the real question is are these experiences of true racism, or contrived annoyances the Obamas are using to relate to underprivileged minorities who have experienced true racism? The First Couple must be playing with us.
