A number of news sources including the Israeli news website Debkafile are reporting that Cuban military forces are in Syria.
Sources believe the troops are advising the military of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and could be making preparations to operate Russian-made tanks to fight US-backed rebel forces.
The head of Cuba’s Armed Forces, General Leopoldo Cintra Frias visited Syria recently, bringing a group of Cuban military personnel to join forces with Russia to support Assad.
This news coming in part from a report from the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American studies.
One U.S. official saying the Cuban troops may have arrived in Syria on Russian aircraft.
Meanwhile, Washington considers the recent reestablishment of relations with Cuba as a major triumph.
