Another Victory For Council On American-Islamic Relations: Pork No Longer Served In Federal Prisons

CAIR Celebrates Victory After Government Does Away With Pork in Federal Prisons

The federal government is cutting more pork – but it’s not the kind of pork might be thinking of.

Regardless, the Council on American-Islamic Relations is now celebrating the move as a victory.

“Finally, the government has decided to eliminate pork — from the menu in federal prisons,” CAIR said in a tweet sent out on Friday.

The federal Bureau of Prisons, responsible for running 122 prison facilities and feeding their inmates three meals per day, said it will stop serving the meat, which is forbidden among observant Muslims and Jews, because inmates just don’t want it.

“Why keep pushing food that people don’t want to eat?” a spokesman for the bureau told the Washington Post. “Pork has been the lowest-rated food by inmates for several years.”

But the National Pork Producers Council, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association, says that’s hogwash.

“I find it hard to believe that a survey would have found a majority of any population saying, ‘No thanks, I don’t want any bacon,’ NPPC spokesman Dave Warner said.

Warner added that the organization plans to figure out exactly how the ban came about, and then take it from there. As for any actions it might take going forward, Warner said that no options are being ruled out.

The prison system already makes available alternatives for Muslim and Jewish prisoners whose religion forbids them from eating certain foods, the Post also noted.
